Eldon’s ECOM outdoor enclosure gains Type Approval in Australia

VicRoads in Australia is a government organization in the state of Victoria. Among many other duties, VicRoads plans, develops and manages the road network in the state.

The capital of the state is the well-known city of Melbourne, where some 70% of the state’s population resides. VicRoads has now officially awarded one of Eldon’s ECOM range enclosures Type Approval. The approval process has been managed by Eldon’s long-term partner and distributor in Australia, NHP.

A custom version of the ECOM enclosure has been awarded a Type Approval by VicRoads, which means that the enclosure can be used for all VicRoads project works including the upcoming infrastructure projects in Melbourne. The enclosure in question is the ECOM16086 adapted to meet VicRoads’ specification, referred to as TCS 061 ‘ITS Field Cabinets’.

Like the standard ECOM, the customized enclosure is manufactured from marine grade aluminum and features vandal resistant double wall construction to provide up to 80% better thermal performance than the single wall versions. This makes the enclosure ideal for outdoor installations under full solar load conditions. The enclosure has IP66 ingress protection and IK10 impact protection.

The award of the Type Approval has been a lengthy process requiring a lot of effort from VicRoads, NHP, and Eldon. However, it has helped NHP to build a relationship with VicRoads and strengthen the partnership between NHP and Eldon. Eldon supported the process by designing and building the prototype unit and managing the DEKRA testing to ensure the enclosure meets VicRoads’ specification in full.

“This project is a very good example of how we aim to support both our partners and end customers by adapting our products to meet exact and demanding requirements”, said José Rodríguez, Product Manager.
