A recent project with our agent in Canada (Ralston Metal Products) had "complicated" written all over it, but in the end it was so successful they stand a big chance in winning the next stage.
Ralston via an agent in the US won a project to supply stainless steel enclosures to CODELCO, the state owned mining company in Chile.
The enclosures were originally manufactured at Eldon´s stainless steel centre of excellence in the UK, before being shipped to the Export Department based in Drachten (Holland).
From Drachten a container loaded with 36 x KGR and 10 x ADR Stainless Steel wall mount enclosures and 20 x KSS Stainless Steel floor standing enclosures was dispatched by cargo ship to Chile´s Capital Santiago. They were then transferred to a plane for delivery to one of CODELCO´s four mines in Northern and Central Chile.
Another container is currently on it´s way with the third shipment due to leave by late July.
CODELCO (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile) was formed in 1955 and has it´s headquarters also in Santiago. They are the largest copper mining company in the world and produced 1.78 million tonnes in 2006 (12% of world volume and 31% of Chilean output). In their 2006 Annual Report the company estimated that current reserves will ensure more than 70 years of operations at current levels.
Goldman Sachs estimated in 2006 that CODELCO was worth between US $24.5 and $27.5 billion, and they posted a US $9 billion profit the same year.
CODELCO´s symbol is based on the alchemical symbol for copper.
The Republic of Chile occupies a long and narrow coastal strip wedged between the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the north-east, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage at the country´s southernmost tip. It is one of only two countries in South America that does not have a border with Brazil.
Chile's unusual, ribbon-like shape 4,300 km long and on average 175 km wide has given it a hugely varied
climate, ranging from the world's driest desert the
Atacama in the north, through a
Mediterranean climate in the centre, to a snow-prone Alpine climate in the south, with
glaciers,
fjords and
lakes.
Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians (also known as Mapuches) inhabited central and southern Chile. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818.
Chile is also the world´s fifth largest exporter of wine! The population in 2007 was 16,598,074.
